Now that I have signed up for Android and ordered the Android Dev Phone, I figured I'd do the hello world and other tutorials on the site.
I haven't have the chance to look at the actual G1 or Dev Phone yet, so the emulator is the first time I'm looking at Android. First impressions are alright, but the icons certainly lacks the polish of the iPhone. I'd much prefer not to code in Java, and the frameworks will take some getting used to, but the flexibility is really sweet. I still have some hesitation over defining UI using XML files. Can't they use something like YAML? The Hierarchy Viewer looks interesting, but I don't think it is meant as a replacement for a GUI builder, at least not yet.
